How to get fancy writting on your cookies!
And no I don’t really have that good of hand writing 😅.
Ever wonder how cookie decorators get that beautiful calligraphy like fonts on their cookies? Did you just assume that everyone who decorates cookies also just has a masters in hand lettering? While some cookie decorators are in fact gifted with the skill of hand lettering most of us are just faking it… and that’s ok because I’m here to teach you the work around.
So if your handwriting is just as good as mine ( aka looks like a 12 year boys ) then first off you’re going to want a place where you can find those beautiful fonts. which brings us to step 1.
Find a font you love on Dafont.com. I like using the calligraphy tab to find those trendy cursive fonts. Linked below are a few of my go to’s.
Step two you’re going to want a way to project your new found font. So for this I use a Smart Sketcher projector ( Linked Here). There are far more sophisticated projectors out there but what’s great about the smart sketcher is it was designed as a toy for kids. So its super simple to use and you can project any screen shot from your phone onto your cookie.
So that leads us to step 3. So in order to get the phrases I want I just type in my phrase or word I want in the “custom preview” section on Dafont and hit submit. Once the preview loads I snap a screen shot of the words and then project it onto my cookie via my Smart Sketcher app. Sometimes I need to screen shot it a little bigger or a little smaller depending on the size of the cookie, but after you’ve used the smart sketcher a few times you’ll get the hang of it.
Step 4 is simply to trace the words onto your cookie using detail consistency icing. Need a good recipe for royal icing? You can snag my personal recipe here and the best part of this recipe is it comes out at a detail consistency every time (wahoo!)
Step 5 be super impressed with your fancy writing! If I can do this anyone can! And you want to know the best part? The smart sketcher is only around $100 to buy ( I found mine on the “used very good” list on Amazon for around $49). I honestly had plans of upgrading my projector as my business began to grow but now that I have gotten the hang of using my Smart Sketcher I really don’t see any reason to upgrade.
Ok there you have it ! Now you too can have those fancy fonts on your cookies even if your hand writing is mediocre like mine…. trust me you’ve got this !
