5 tools you need to start your home COokie Business.

  1. Your Recipe.

I know this one seems obvious, but I started my home bakery with literally one recipe, and I am confident you can too! I practiced and modified my O.G. recipe so many times until I was confident that they were the perfect sugar cookie recipe. So, when you’re starting your cookie business make sure you have a base recipe you can be proud of. Remember it doesn’t need to be perfect to start but it should be something you are confident selling! If you need a recipe snag mine here. But even if you don’t use my sugar cookie recipe make sure you have one that you can be proud of!

  2. Equipment to bake that recipe.

If you’re thinking of starting a home bakery business there’s a good chance you probably already have what you need to start. But I wanted to put this section in here to remind you that you don’t need a big kitchen with double ovens and a kitchen aide to get started. I started my baking business in my 800 square foot duplex where I could literally touch all 4 walls when I was standing in the middle of the kitchen. If you’re baking cookies a simple oven, hand mixer and good double insulated cookie sheet is enough to get you started. My favorite baking sheets are Nordicware pans. So, remember you can start where you are and upgrade later!

  3. An Audience

The next thing you need is an audience. This can seem like the most daunting task as a new bakery owner (or at least it was for me).

The easiest way I found to start growing an audience was by creating an Instagram/ or Facebook account and just start posting. Pick a platform that you know you will be able to show up on consistently on and then just start posting photos of what you’re baking.

And when you’re just starting out be sure to share those posts to your personal page. I know it can feel cringy at first, but I can assure you your friends and family want to support you!! And I promise the only person who finds it cringy is you.

  4. Packaging

Next up is packaging. I love simple yet effective packaging so much so that I created a separate blog post just for that! Check it out here.

  5. A way to take payment

And last but not least you’re going to need a way to take payment! The easiest way I found to take payment digitally was to use Square.

It’s great because you can either use a card reader that will plug right into your phone, or you can send an invoice via email (which is great for custom orders). It does charge a transaction fee, but customers will want a way to pay via credit card and setting up Square is simpler than you think!

Happy Baking!
